As a chase ensued, the dog was released, attacking the officer

A pit bull terrier bit a Chicago police officer Tuesday evening while two officers chased a suspect on the South Side.

The officers were on patrol at about 6:19 p.m. when they approached a man, who then quickly fled.

As a chase ensued, the dog was released, running toward the officers and attacking them in the 7500 block of South Union Avenue.

One officer was bitten in the hands. The dog was shot and killed.

The officer was hospitalized at Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition with non-life threatening injuries. No one was taken into custody.
