18 Taken to Hospitals, Including Students, After ‘Escape of Gas' at Chicago Elementary School: CFD

Eighteen people, including more than a dozen students, were taken to Chicago hospitals following an "escape of gas" outside an elementary school Tuesday, authorities said.

According to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford, 17 Sawyer Elementary School students and one teacher were taken to various hospitals around Chicago as a precautionary measure following the potential leak.

Langford said a gas company was working outside of the Southwest Side school when there was an "escape of gas." Some who smelled the gas were sickened, he said.

Officials metered the school but said nothing was detected and the school remained open.

Conditions for those transported remained unclear.
