Teen Dies at Cook County Juvenile Detention Center

The 16-year-old collapsed after an argument during a basketball game

A 16-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon while being held at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, authorities said.

Terry Bell collapsed around 3 p.m. According to the Medical Examiner's office, Bell was playing basketball at the detention center when he got into a verbal altercation with another person and collapsed as he was being led away.

He was transported to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m.

His grandmother told the Chicago Tribune Bell had a history of high blood pressure and shouldn't have been allowed to play.

An autopsy performed Sunday was inconclusive, and officials asked for more tests.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle has called for the center to close, according to the Tribune.
