Teen Cross Country Runner Struck, Killed by Car

Patrick Mizwicki, 14, of New Lenox, was participating in a cross-country meet when he was struck by a car and died Thursday night.

A teen on Lincolnway East High School's cross country team died Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle at 104th Avenue and Cal-Sag Road in unincorporated Palos Township, according to a release issued by the Cook County Sheriff's office.

Patrick Mizwicki, 14, of New Lenox, was a freshmen and taking part in a practice run involving six area schools, according to the Chicago Tribune's report. He was participating in a cross-country meet and was running eastbound on a horse trail through Treason Woods.

Mizwicki's view was obstructed by a passing southbound car as he was attempting to cross 104th Ave., and he was struck by an oncoming northbound car, according to reports.

The driver of the vehicle hit her brakes but was unable to avoid Mizwicki.

At approximately 5:20 p.m. Cook County Sheriff's Police patrol officers responded to an emergency call involving the vehicle and pedestrian, according to the release.

Mizwicki was transported to Christ Hospital by North Palos Fire Department in critical condition and passed away at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, said the release.

The driver was issued minor citations for failure to yield at a crosswalk and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. No further charges are pending.
