Vigil Held For Girl, 13, Who Drowned Near Loyola Beach

Four other children were also taken from the water, but are all expected to be okay

A vigil was held Monday for a girl died Friday night after she and another girl were swept into Lake Michigan at Loyola Beach on the North Side.

The girls, both 13, were swimming with a group of friends about 7:30 p.m. when they were caught by a strong current at the Rogers Park beach, according to Chicago Police.

One of the girls was pulled out of the water by a police officer, and divers found the second girl about 20 minutes later, police said.

Paramedics took one girl, Darinanne Torres, to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she died, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Torres lived in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

An autopsy Saturday ruled her death a drowning accident.

Friends and family gathered at the place where Darinanne lost her life for a send off of love.

Her funeral will be held Saturday morning.

A GoFundMe has been crated to help with her family's expenses.
