13-Year-Old Robbed in Chicago While Walking Home From School

A 13-year-old boy was robbed in Chicago Monday while walking home from school.

Miguel Murillo walks a half-mile to and from school each day in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood, but on Monday, the seventh grader said he was just around the corner from his house when he was stopped.

Around 3:45 p.m., in the 2400 block of West Albion, Murillo said someone riding a bike came out of an alley and ordered him to empty his pockets.

“I was really nervous and scared on the inside but I tried not to show him that I was scared,” he said.

The teen complied and the suspect fled westbound on Albion.

Gualaupe Murillo, the teen’s father, said he’s outraged the suspect, believed to be in his 20s, targeted his young son for just $20.

“Just out of nowhere this guy comes out of the alley and I think he knows what he’s doing,” Guadalupe Murllo said.

The family said they want police to step up patrols when school gets out.

“I think they need more protection because there are so many kids and sometimes the parents cannot go pick them up because we have to work,” Guadalupe Murillo said.

Miguel Murillo also said he wants to warn fellow students about the safety risk.

“Be more safe and aware of their surroundings,” he said. “And try to stay with groups and try to stay as safe as possible.”
