Twelve people were taken to area hospitals after being overcome by fumes at a North Side laundry Thursday morning on Goose Island.
An EMS Plan 1 and Level 1 HazMat response were called at the Five Star Hotel Laundry at 1060 W. Division St. about 9 a.m., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said, noting that the HazMat was upgraded to a Level 2 at 9:20 a.m.
Twelve people were taken to area hospitals -- complaining mostly of breathing problems, he said. Ten were in good condition and one in serious but stable condition.
Apparently, some type of chlorine and ammonia were mixed, and people were sickened by the fumes, Curtis said. The incident remains under investigation.
The business is an industrial laundry service, Curtis said. The building was fully evacuated.
Division Street was closed between Halsted and Elston streets while emergency crews remained on the scene.
