Authorities Offer $10,000 Reward for Information on Chicago Firefighter's Son's Death in Chatham

The son of a Chicago firefighter found dead early Saturday outside his burning van in Chatham had suffered multiple stab wounds, authorities said, and now the family pleads the public for information on the cause of the shocking incident that ensued.

The body of 25-year-old Tyler Bernicky, of Bronzeville, was found around 6 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue when officers responded to a report of a burning vehicle in the block, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Police said Bernicky had suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and legs and was pronounced dead at the scene. His maroon van was found burning at the rear of a building in the block.

“Tyler was visiting his family, where he regularly visited,” said the victims' father, Lt. David Bernicky. “It was his grandmother’s house.”

The Chicago Fire Department held a press conference on Monday afternoon where the victims’ parents and officials alike said they are relying on the public to come forward with any information in connection to the tragic incident, offering a $10,000 reward.

Police said that reviewing security cameras that may have captured the moments leading up to his death on the Chatham block will be key in hopes of solving this homicide investigation.

An autopsy was expected to be conducted Sunday by the medical examiner’s office.
