Up to 1,000 Indiana steelworkers are looking unemployment in the face, following an announcement by their employer, Arcelor-Mittal, that "mass layoffs" are planned for July.
The company is the world's largest steelmaker, but it is facing tough economic times and operational decisions like many others.
The workforce reduction is hitting the Indiana Harbor Flat Carbon facility.
Company leaders said in a public statement, that they hope the laid-off employees can be called back to work as soon as the economy improves.
"Until we start building things in this country, and we start putting people to work, it's going to get worse," United Steelworkers Local 1010 President Tom Hargrove is quoted as saying by the Nothwest Indiana Times.
