Two Dead in West Side Hit-and-Run

The driver also struck three parked cars

Two pedestrians were struck in a hit-and-run in Humboldt Park on the city's West Side Saturday night. Both of them have died.

The victims were crossing the street in the 4300 block of West North Avenue at about 10:10 p.m. when the driver of a 2002 Buick driving east struck them and then fled the scene.

One of the pedestrians was transported to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other victim was unresponsive on the scene. They have been identified as Raman Cruz, 36, and Pablo Esquivel-Vega, who was in his 50s.

Esquivel-Vega lived near Cicero and North Avenue and had just finished working a shift at Carnicerias Jimenez, a Hispanic supermarket at Keeler and North, according to the store's owner, Alfredo Jimenez.

The driver, who has been identified as a 24-year-old male, also hit three parked cars at North Avenue and Kedvale. The driver and a passenger are in custody, and charges are pending.
