One person is dead and six people were displaced after a house fire broke out Tuesday in North Mayfair on the city's Northwest Side.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire at 12:28 a.m. in the basement of a two-story, single-family house in the 4800 block of North Keystone Avenue, Chicago police and fire officials said.

A 39-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene, officials said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further information, including his identity, was not available.

Authorities said another male at the scene refused medical attention. No other injuries were reported, but six people who were upstairs and able to escape were displaced, according to fire officials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest the fire was accidental, officials said.
