1 Dead After Couple Gunned Down in Driveway of Family Home

The devastated family says it is still unknown what exactly happened to lead to the fatal shooting

A teenage mother is dead and a man is critical condition after a couple was gunned down while sitting in a car in the driveway of a south suburban Chicago home Thursday evening.

19-year-old DeArrea Haymond was killed and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Brendan Hudson remains in critical condition after he was shot three times, with bullets hitting the side of his head, stomach and knee.

The couple was sitting in a car in the driveway of Hudson's family home on Irving Avenue in Dolton, across from Thornridge High School around 7 p.m. Hudson's mother Colleen Hudson was home at the time, and says the doorbell rang. When she went outside, she found her son with multiple gunshot wounds.

“Mom, I’ve been shot,” he said.

Hudson was in surgery overnight at Cook County’s Stroger Hospital. His mom says doctors are optimistic about his recovery.

The devastated family says it is still unknown what exactly happened to lead to the fatal shooting.

“I'm feeling terrible,” Colleen Hudson said. “I'm feeling so bad for that mother that lost her child. Oh my God."

Dolton police was on the scene for hours investigating the scene until just after 5 a.m. with the Cook County and South Suburban Major Crimes Task Forces.

Haymond's mother Dalena Grant said that Haymond's daughter doesn't understand what happened to her mother.

"When she get older, we're just gonna tell her, Mommy's with the angels," Grant said.

No suspects are in custody, but sources tell NBC 5 that police may know who they are looking for.
