1 Dead, 1 Wounded in West Side Shooting

One man is dead and another injured after a shooting on Chicago’s West Side Friday night.

Two 21-year-old men were standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of W. Grenshaw St in the city’s University Village neighborhood around 11:45 p.m.

A dark-colored van pulled up beside them and someone opened fire, police said. The victims took themselves to Stroger Hospital, where one was pronounced dead with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and chest. The other victim was shot in the arm and listed in stable condition.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality. The victim has not been identified.

Witnesses said there was a party bus and several cars on the street at the time of the shooting. Initial reports indicated one of the victims may have been the person who rented the party bus, but police continue to investigate a possible connection.

Witnesses and area residents said the area in which the shooting occurred is not typically prone to gun violence like this.

“We heard like seven gunshots fired. I woke up because it was loud, I could feel the vibrations in my heart," said Brittany Thele, who said she had her windows open overnight. "When I woke up and realized what it was, there were five more gunshots.”

“Now that this happened, I think I'll be more cautious than usual," she added. "For instance, I have my mace on me this morning. Also, it kinda makes me want to move. I don't feel safe around here.”
