1 Dead, 1 Injured in Police-Involved Shooting in North Lawndale

A man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting incident involving Chicago Police in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side Sunday morning.

At about 8:30 a.m., officers were called to a home in the 3500 block of W. Grenshaw for a report of "shots fired/domestic-related man with a gun," according to a preliminary statement from Chicago Police. When the officers arrived, a witness told them someone inside the home had been shot.

Police attempted to enter the home, but they were unable to get inside, according to police. A man inside the home refused to open the door, so police forced their way in, where they found a man with a handgun.

Officers said they ordered the man to drop the gun, but he did not comply. The man then pointed the gun at them, and the officers shot at him with their own guns "in fear for their lives," police said. The man was fatally struck and pronounced dead on the scene.

A woman was also found inside the home with a gunshot wound and several stab wounds, police said. She was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
