Mayor Daley, frustrated by a Chicago-based org's decision to hold its convention in Las Vegas, says Chicago just can't compete with Vegas' appeal.
"In Las Vegas they're giving everything away. Many of them don't have Labor contracts. We can't compete with that. " Daley said Thursday morning.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society says they decided to host their annual convention elsewhere because exhibitors have complained about the high cost of services, electrical in particular, in Chicago.
One exhibitor said its electrical-services bill jumped from $4,000 in Orlando to $40,000 in Chicago for the same booth, HIMSS president and CEO Steve Lieber told the Chicago Tribune.
"Everybody has to get together. The unions, the convention and tourism people and figure out how to compete," Daley said.
He said other companies complained their costs rose four to eight times over what they paid in Orlando.
