Authorities have Brian Dorian pinpointed as the Honey Bee Killer. But at least two dozen family, friends and colleagues say otherwise.
In advance of Dorian's Tuesday court appearance on first-degree murder charges, about 25 people gathered at Benny's Sportsbar in Lynwood to stand behind him and denounce the charges.
Among them was Dorian's supervisor in the Lynwood Police Department, Sgt. Tim Smith, who said he will not abandon his colleague.
"Even if they gagged me, I'd still speak up to support Brian. He's not capable of what he is accused of. It's not in his moral character. One of the reasons we became cops is because we couldn't stand headlines like this."
Dorian was arrested last week after a shooting spree and a nearly three-day manhunt. Last Tuesday, a gunman, now believed to be Dorian, shot at four people in two different locations. One man, 45-year-old Rolando Alonso, died.
Almost immediately, the suspected gunman's father expressed his belief that authorities had the wrong guy.
Investigators pulled Brian Dorian over in Schererville, Ind., hours after the shooting spree began because his truck matched the gunman's vehicle description but later released him, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Diane Dorian said that she intially laughed and told her son that he had "my bad genes" when she informed him that he'd been pulled over.
Now, she said it's "infuriating" that her son is in this situation, primarily because "the real shooter is out there."
Smith said he's notified the American Civil Liberties Union to help with Brian Dorian's case.
