Two armed robbers bound, beat and robbed a Chicago man during a home invasion on the Far Northwest Side Wednesday night.
Shai Miller, 57, and his son, 14, were tied up with duct tape in their home in the 6300 block of North Kildare Avenue in the Sauganash neighborhood around 9:15 p.m., police said.
Miller, who owns a jewelry supply store on Wabash Avenue in the Loop, was severely beaten by the thieves. He is listed in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. His son was not severely injured.
The home was ransacked and several items, including a painting and silverware, were stolen, police said. It's not clear if the incident was random or if Miller was targeted.
Despite being bound and forced to lie on the floor, the victims told police they got a good look at their attackers and were able to provide descriptions. Police said they're looking for two white men between the ages of 20 and 25.
Neighbors, like Patrick Yon, have been on alert for incidents like these.
"Over the last year or so, there's been a few more in this neighborhood. My neighbor here had actually come home at 9:15 in the morning or so to find two gentlemen in his house," he said.
Yon added that he's been so alarmed that he recently got his own security system.
"I have a 10 year old daughter and a wife at home," he said. "It concerns you when at 9 p.m. someone storms into a neighbors home."
Police are investigating and declined to release more details because of the victim's condition.
