Onion Recall Expands to Illinois

The items may have been sold to stores including Whole Foods and Market Fresh

A major onion recall has expanded to Illinois.

Fears of listeria contamination have prompted Gills Onions to issue a voluntary recall of its onions in seven states. The company sells diced, slivered and whole-peeled onions and celery mixes to several retailers.

Garden-Fresh Foods on Wednesday also initiated a voluntary recall of some ready-to-eat salads, salsa and slaw products containing Gills Onions, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Gills has requested removal of all items from store shelves.

A full list of products connected to the recall is posted on the FDA's website.

Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious infections in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Short-term symptoms could include high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

The FDA confirms no illness has yet been reported in connection with the recall.
