BA.2 Subvariant Expected to Be Dominant in Chicago By End of Month, Top Doc Says
The BA.2 omicron subvariant is expected to make up most of Chicago's COVID cases by the end of the month, the city's top doctor said Tuesday.

Noting a small increases in cases, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said while the COVID risk remains low in the city, data shows the number of cases of the BA.2 subvariant are doubling every week.
"All we're seeing right now in Chicago and across the Midwest is omicron. We are seeing two primary subvariants of omicron: the B1, which is the one that hit us through the surge, is still about 69% and BA.2, which is the one that we're watching and is more contagious than B.1 and probably some of what is driving that increase around the world, is just over 30% at this point. In Chicago, we've seen that BA.2 doubling about every seven days, so we do think we'll see predominance, meaning most of our cases will be that BA.2, by the end of the month."

Chicago Announces Changes to Travel Advisory Format Beginning Friday
Starting later this week, Chicago's travel advisory will look different as city officials announced plans to change how the advisory is structured.
Following changes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the city said it will instead categorize counties and locations as low, medium or high risk, based on data provided by the CDC. Residents will need to check the map for the latest information prior to travel.
“Chicago’s Travel Advisory was always meant to be used by Chicagoans as a tool to help make informed decisions about travel based on their individual and local COVID-19 risk,” Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady. “As we enter this new phase of the pandemic, it’s important for us to remember that all risk is local – and by aligning with the CDC COVID-19 Community Levels, we’re able to better recommend the prevention steps that align with the specific risk.”

Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady is expected to hold a COVID-19 update Tuesday afternoon.
Speaking at 1 p.m., Arwady and CDPH Medical Director Dr. Geraldine Luna and Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez, are expected to address COVID case counts, vaccination data and "provide an update on Chicago's Travel Advisory, including a transition of the advisory.

COVID by the Numbers: Cases, Hospitalizations Continue Slow Descent 3 Weeks After Mask Mandate Lifted
Three weeks after the state of Illinois lifted its mask mandate, and amid reports that cases of an omicron subvariant are beginning to increase, state health officials say that rates of new COVID infections have remained largely steady, and even decreased, over the last seven days.
According to the latest figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health, The state is now averaging 1,085 new cases of COVID per day over the last week.
That figure has actually gone down from last Monday, when the state was averaging 1,177 new cases of the virus per day.

What Experts Are Watching for Amid 'Heightened Alert' Over BA.2
Health experts say they are paying close attention to the BA.2 variant over the next few weeks as they wait to see if another COVID surge will arise.
But while many believe a rise in cases is possible, some say it is not expected to be more severe than the omicron surge see earlier this year.

Health Experts Predict Uptick in U.S. COVID Cases Due to New BA.2 Variant
U.S. health experts are warning an emerging, highly contagious Covid omicron variant, called BA.2, could soon lead to another uptick in domestic coronavirus cases.
White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said BA.2 is about 50% to 60% more transmissible than omicron, but it does not appear to be more severe. Health officials continue to stress coronavirus vaccines and boosters remain the best ways to prevent serious illness from the virus.

Masks No Longer Recommended in Any of Illinois' 102 Counties, CDC Says
For the first time since the end of Illinois' mask mandate, residents in all 102 counties can safely visit public indoor spaces without wearing masks, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
All Illinois counties were listed in the low category on the CDC's COVID-19 community level map Thursday, meaning masks can safely be removed.
Under metrics released a week earlier, masks had only been recommended in Johnson County, which had been ranked as a high community level - the highest level of COVID-19 risk.

The Latest Mask Guidance and Travel Tips During Busy Spring Break Travel
This spring break season, the Transportation Security Administration is bracing for a spike in travel volume that will surpass 90% of pre-pandemic levels for March.
For United Airlines, this weekend is expected to be one of the busiest for spring break travel.
With COVID restrictions rescinded in much of the country, people are seizing the opportunity to get away and take in different sights. Despite relaxed mitigations, the TSA's mask mandate remains in place.
Under the mandate, masks are required on buses, trains and airplanes as well as at transportation facilities until April 18.

Coronavirus in Illinois: 7K New Cases, 123 Deaths in Last Week as Decline Continues
Illinois health officials reported 7,467 new COVID-19 cases over the past week, along with 123 additional deaths and over 56,000 new vaccine doses administered, marking a continued drop in cases and deaths.
The previous week, the state reported 8,519 new cases and 149 deaths. The week before that, 10,462 new cases and 272 deaths were reported.

Experts Say New COVID Variants Likely, But How Severe Will They Be?
While many are closely watching omicron subvariant BA.2 and the so-called "deltacron" hybrid strain, some experts have suggested that new COVID variants could arrive in the coming months.
