Save on “Splurging” for Mom

The recession has made money tight, but there are ways to show mom some love this year without breaking the bank.

Mother’s Day is the most popular day of the year to dine out, according to the National Restaurant Association.  But before you head out the door, consider heading to the Web first.

Sites like Restaurant.com or ActiveDiner.com often have the scoop on deep discounts, like gift certificates offering as much as 60 percent off.  And with Opentable.com, there's no excuse on not knowing what places are offering up holiday specials.  You can find the right price and reserve a table with a couple of clicks.

"It’s always good to do something special," said Joseph Doppes with Bistrot Margot in Old Town.  The French restaurant has been offering Mother’s Day deals for 10 years.

This year: a Prix Fixe 3 Course meal for $24.95.

Is flower power a better way to mom’s heart?

Floral designer David Swanson at Lasalle Flowers says to get the best deal, it’s always best to go with the designer’s choice rather than get too specific on a particular arrangement.

You can save 10 to 15 percent,  Swanson said, sometimes by just switching out to a cheaper container.

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 9.
