Walgreens Takes Over NYC

Walgreens just became the biggest drug store name in New York City.

The Deerfield-based company is now officially the largest drugstore operator in New York City after completing a $623 million buyout of the Duane Reade chain. It already had the distinction of being the largest chain in the U.S.

The acquisition gives Walgreen 258 additional stores in the metro area, along with two distribution centers and Duane Reade's headquarters. Duane Reade has more metro New York City locations than any other drugstore chain.

Until the purchase, Walgreens was the third-largest player in the nation's biggest market with 70 stores.

Walgreens now has almost 7,500 stores around the country.
