For weeks, customers have suspected that something was not so sweet about the Roscoe Village bakery, Sweet Thang.
It turns out Sweet Thang is a reincarnation of the former Sweet Occasions chain. All locations of Sweet Occasions closed over the summer amidst allegations of bounced checks, unpaid wages, and spending business money on personal expenses like vacations and a new car. To make matters worse, the employers' names (which purportedly changed at random) could not be found on the actual business license.
According to a former employee, the owner of Sweet Occasions spent more time "concentrating on the purchase (with what money, I don't know) and opening of Sweet Thang in Roscoe Village" than fixing his current business at the time.
But as the saying goes, "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Sweet Thang has also closed under similar circumstances. Despite being labeled a "bakery," the business was accused of not baking its own pastries, and once again paychecks have bounced. The owner closed the shop after being confronted on the matter.
Former employees will be demanding their unpaid wages via a protest this afternoon. The picketers are working with the Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues to hold a press conference in front of Sweet Thang, 2142 W Roscoe St., at 3 p.m.
