Truck Slams Into Bensenville Deli

Driver passed out behind the wheel and took out deli's entrance says the owner

An AT&T maintenance truck drove through a parking lot and slammed into the front of a Bensenville Deli Monday.

John Asti was in the kitchen of Asti Italian Deli, at 1410 West Irving Park Road, when he heard a loud crash.

"I was in the kitchen with my delivery driver, and I just heard something that in all honesty sounded like an earthquake," said Asti, who co-owns the deli with his brothers. "The whole front of the brick building, including the main entrance, was totally demolished. There was brick and cinder block everywhere."

The driver of the truck told Asti that he was coughing and passed out behind the wheel while driving westbound on Irving Park Road. The truck then caromed out of control, in front of oncoming traffic and through the parking lot of the deli, Asti said. The crash occurred at about 8 a.m., before the restaurant opened for the day.

Asti rushed out and found the driver alert but bleeding from the side of his mouth.

"In all honesty I was pretty shaken up by this," he said. "Luckily, we weren't standing right there. We cannot operate, and I have no idea when we are going to reopen."
