Word on the Street: Oct. 12 – 20

Weekly Roundup of Events in the City

This week's Word on the Street segment took us to the River East Art Center, hands down, one of the best facilities in the city to throw an event. On this particular night, it was the Wine, Women and Shoes event, in where they raised almost $120,000 for charity. Memo to the fellas out there -- on the surface, "Wine, Women and Shoes" doesn't sound like a great night out, but think about all the single ladies in the house. Nuff said. Here's some of the events you can look forward to this week:

  • If you have a palate for the bubbly, you'll definitely want to check out Tour de Champagne at the Drake Hotel on Saturday night. More than 20 champagne houses will be represented at the event, and it will be paired with cuisine from local restaurants. Tickets are $120 each, $160 for VIP.
  • It's hard to believe, but Halloween is only a few weeks away. Get into the spirit by heading over to Daley Plaza. Starting on Friday until Halloween it will be renamed Franken Plaza. Expect plenty of spooky stuff, including scary movies, pumpkin and mask decorating and nightly performances.
  • When you're making purchases this month, check and see if your retailer is giving a portion toward breast cancer awareness. Several local salons, in coordination with Pretty in Pink, are offering discounted, fixed price treatments for $31, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength.
