Man Dies, Search Continues for Woman Swept Away by Lake Michigan

A search is underway for a woman who was swept away by Lake Michigan waves near Highland Park Sunday morning, according to officials.

Authorities said the Coast Guard and local agencies responded to an emergency call around 9:15 a.m. Sunday at Park Avenue Beach, "where 10 individuals of an independent cold weather swim group entered Lake Michigan from the boat launch area and encountered difficulty lake conditions," stated a press release.

A helicopter arrived at the scene around 11:45 a.m., officials said, after lake conditions impeded search boats from entering the water.

One of two men found in distress was found unresponsive by local responders and given CPR before being transported to Highland Park Hospital. The 46-year-old man was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.

Police departments along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Illinois and Wisconsin have been advised to monitor their beaches for the missing swimmer.

No further details were immediately available.
