Three Charged After Luring Cop Into Ambush

Was checking out car posted on Craiglist

An off-duty Markham police officer thought he was going to check out a used car posted on Craigslist.

Instead, three men lured him through a gangway, beat him with a baseball bat and tried to rob him before the cop was able to shoot and injure them. All three have been charged with attempted robbery with a firearm.

"It was an ambush," Markham Deputy Police Chief Tony DuBois told the Sun-Times.

William Hall, 27, Rodney Young, 19, and Daryl McClure, 27, were all charged Saturday night.

The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. Friday when the off-duty officer and a female officer from Markham went to see the car on South Yates, DuBois said.

While walking to the "backyard," the male officer was jumped, beaten in the chest with the bat while the female officer had a gun put to her head.  The male officer pulled out his gun and told the offenders he was a police officer. He told police one of the men pointed a gun at him so he fired his weapon, striking all three of the offenders.

Chicago police arrived on the scene and took the men into custody.
