‘Slumdog’ introduces many to a new style of dance

Many Chicagoans are familiar with the fantastic musical numbers from "Bollywood" films. But thanks to the success of the Oscar-winning film, Slumdog Millionaire, even more people are interested in learning the genre's style of dance.

"Bollywood," a blend of the words Bombay and Hollywood, refers to a specific style of Indian cinema. The genre consists of epic, melodramatic plots and catchy song-and-dance numbers.

One such dance routine is portrayed in the movie Slumdog Millionaire, and several dance instructors in the Chicago area have reported a surge of calls from people wanting to learn the fun, energetic moves.

Dance instructor Arjun Verma at the Discovery Center has noted a 25-percent increase in sign-ups for his Bollywood dance class.

The dance moves are high-energy, mixing traditional Indian dance styles with hip-hop and pop, Verma explained.

"You're doing moves you normally wouldn't do in other classes and controlling parts of your body that you normally wouldn't," he told the Chicago Sun-Times. "It's something totally new and different."
