Susan Carlson

Susan Carlson joined NBC 5 in July 2013, bringing 20 years of experience covering news in Chicago. She was born and raised in the south suburbs and never left Chicago, starting her broadcast career in radio. Prior to joining NBC 5, she was the morning anchor at CBS 2. Her 11-year stint there followed gigs at multiple Chicago stations including ABC 7, WLS radio and WGN-TV.

Susan garnered widespread national and international exposure as one of the very few selected media witnesses to the execution of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh in 2001. She is the recipient of multiple awards, including an Edward R. Murrow and two individual Emmys for on camera excellence. 

She graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University Chicago, where she also returned as an adjunct professor in their School of Communication. She received her masters in journalism from Roosevelt University. 

Susan is the proud single mom of a little girl she adopted from India. She has a soft spot for stories involving children, adoption and animals.
