Some Like it Hot

Check out these cooking classes to help expand your culinary expertise

If you know your way around a kitchen but would like to add to your culinary repertoire, check out the city's array of cooking classes, such as these two upcoming workshops that will teach you some tasty new techniques.

Bespoke Cuisine, a boutique catering and cooking class company in the West Loop is hosting its next "Mix it Up" monthly session on Tuesday, May 19. This class will focus on classic Italian dishes in a four-course meal, which you will cook in a fun, interactive workshop. You'll be making asparagus and prosciutto in puff pastry; olive-parmesan crostini; a hearty salad with oven-roasted tomatoes, pancetta and housemade Caesar dressing; Sicilian chicken with parmesan pasta; and almond bread pudding cakes with chocolate "soup" and toasted almonds. After your time in the kitchen, you'll get to enjoy the fruits of your labor in a communal-style dinner in Bespoke's welcoming dining room. Singles, couples and small groups are welcome at this mixer, which will go from 6:30-9PM and costs $80 per person. (There is also a buy-one-get-the-second-half-off special going on right now, so two people would be $120.) Contact 312-455-8400 or to make your reservation by Sunday, May 17.

An intermediate-level sushi-making class will take place on Thursday, May 21 at Cooking Fools, a caterer and cooking class venue in Wicker Park. If you've already got the basics down, you'll want to build upon your sushi education at this session, which will teach participants how to construct complex topped maki and how to prepare soft shell crab for spider rolls. The instructor will also break down an entire fish to create cuts for nigiri and maki. You'll get to learn various cutting-edge techniques used at contemporary sushi restaurants. Beer and wine will be available for purchase during this workshop. The class will be held from 6:30-9PM and is priced at $85 per person. Call 773-276-5565 or email to reserve your spot.
