Slick conditions on the Edens Expressway spur ramp caused a 17-car pileup Monday night.
Other ramps and overpasses on the expressway were also coated with black ice, NBC5's Anna Davlantes reported. There were no major injuries in the pileup, which occurred in Northbrook. Several overpasses and ramps were shut down due to the conditions, Davlantes reported.
"It was pretty scary to come over the crest of the hill and see nothing but everything stopped right in front of you," said driver Fred Klepitch. "I thought I was going to miss it all -- I thought I was going to stop way in time, but instead, I went into a 30-yard skid, hit the rail and joined the cars."
No major injuries were reported as a result of the pileup.
Snow was also reported in Northwest Indiana, with Interstate 94 being shut down between Burns Harbor and Michigan City due to the treacherous driving conditions.
At one point, all of the overpasses north of Dempster Street were shut down due to the slick conditions. However, Illinois Department of Transportation crews were out late Monday night, and the ramps were being re-opened, Davlantes reported.
