Shaw's Toasts Chicago's “Front Yard”

Shaw's hosts a dinner for "Chicago's Lakefront," a new show on WTTW

We might not border an ocean, but we certainly have a celebrated shoreline. Lake Michigan is as integral to Chicago's personality as its people, and it is being showcased by a new documentary airing on WTTW. On-air host, producer and Chicago Architecture Foundation docent Geoffrey Baer takes us on a journey along the "people's paradise" in "Chicago's Lakefront," which was produced in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Daniel Burnham's landmark "Plan of Chicago," which made Lake Michigan the star attraction it is today. Make no little plans, indeed.

Shaw's Crab House will applaud this vision and Baer's series with a special "Chicago Lakefront" dinner on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the River North location. Baer will be in attendance, and guests will receive a DVD copy of the documentary. Shaw's chef Arnulfo Tellez, wine sommelier Chad Feldman and pastry chef Manuel Nichols collaborated on the evening's menu, which was inspired by a 1945 dinner served at Edgewater Beach. All of the seafood served in the dinner is on the Shedd Aquarium's "Best Choice List," and several Great Lakes wineries will be featured as pairings.

The evening will begin with a 6PM reception featuring Cotuit oysters on the half shell and shrimp-and-crab fritters with an L. Mawby Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine from the Leelanau Peninsula in Michigan. The sit-down dinner will be served at 6:30PM, starting with an Edgewater Beach melba salad with lettuce, chicory, apricot and apple paired with a Blackstar Farms riesling from the Grand Traverse Peninsula in Michigan. The entree is a choice of a Great Lakes seafood platter with broiled Lake Michigan whitefish and sauteed Yellow Lake perch or a charbroiled filet mignon with mushrooms, creamed spinach and Parisienne boiled potatoes. The entree will be accompanied by a Triennes Viognier Saintes Fleur or a 2004 Chateau Vignot St. Emillion Grand Cru. The dessert course will consist of Shaw's signature chocolate layer cake served with Lynfred Raspberry Wine from Roselle.

Shaw's "Chicago Lakefront" dinner is $70 per person. Call 312-527-2722 for reservations.
