Brendt Barbur was riding his bike in New York City and was hit by a bus.
But instead of giving up his two-wheeled passion, he founded the Bicycle Film Festival (BFF), a five-day music, movies, and art event dedicated to celebrating everything from bad-ass BMXes to those goofy recumbent jobbers. The festival rolls into town today and continues through Sunday.
A 39-city rolling tour, the BFF includes five days of events and activities that all aim to reinvent the wheel. The BFF kick-off "Bikes Rock" concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Metro featuring Mike Simonetti, Busdriver and Glass Candy (an after-party follows downstairs at Smart Bar). Tickets are $10 a pop.
The free-wheeling fun continues throughout the weekend with a city-wide scavenger hunt and an evening art show on Thursday and international bike-focused films screening on Friday and Saturday (with, of course, hipster after-parties each night). The event culminates with an old-school block party in Pilsen on Sunday.
