Oscar Mayer Declares Hot Dogs Sandwiches and the Internet Loses It

The wiener company officially declared a hot dog a sandwich on Twitter, giving its followers exactly 24 hours to change the company’s mind

Oscar Mayer has a way with… sparking a serious social media debate.

The wiener company officially declared a hot dog a sandwich on Twitter Thursday, which was also National Sandwich Day, giving its followers exactly 24 hours to change the company’s mind.

“We know what’s true…But we’re gonna give you 24 hours to change our mind,” the tweet read, encouraging viewers to call and give their explanations for why a hot dog is in fact not a sandwich.

Viewers apparently called in several times in the following hours, some citing historical references, others declaring hot dogs their own category (what about corn dogs?), and some even comparing a hot dog to a… taco?

The hashtag #BreadTaco was used.

Even Jimmy John’s joined in the debate, saying “if @oscarmayer says a hot dog is a sandwich, it’s a sandwich! #TeamSandwich.”

But it appeared these arguments weren’t enough, and Oscar Mayer declared once and for all “hot dogs ARE sandwiches.”

“You almost changed our mind…” the company wrote on Twitter.

And then, it went and changed the iconic Weinermobile to the “Sandwichmobile.”
