Tuesday marked the second day of a civil trial in the federal wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the father of a man who was shot to death by a Glen Ellyn police officer in 2006.
The lawsuit was filed by Benjamin Uwumarogie's father, who is the principal of Eugene Field Elementary School in Chicago, claiming that his son should never have been shot by the officer.
The family and their attorneys argue the shooting was unjustified.
Bradley testified that he tried multiple times to restrain a naked Benjamin Uwumarogie, who was 22 years old at the time of his death. Eventually the officer sprayed Uwumarogie five times in the face with pepper spray after the College of DuPage football player refused to stop.
Bradley said the 22-year-old resisted efforts to restrain him and eventually straddled the officer and repeatedly struck him in the face. The officer drew his weapon and shot the father of two once in the head.
"I had to do it—I had no choice," the officer, Jason Bradley, said through tears at the time of the shooting.
