NHL Last Night: Red Wings Crush Sharks 6-0

DETROIT — The NHL defending champions crushed the new season's pacesetters when the Detroit Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks 6-0 on Thursday.

Detroit goalie Ty Conklin made 24 saves for his sixth NHL shutout and Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and two assists for the Red Wings.

San Jose has the league's best record but the Sharks lost for the second straight night.

Canadiens 5, Flyers 2

In Montreal, Alex Kovalev scored a goal to reach 900 NHL career points as Montreal snapped Philadelphia's five-game winning streak.

Sergei Kostitsyn and Steve Begin each had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who responded to three straight defeats.

Kovalev scored for the second game in a row after a personal 19-game goal drought.

Bruins 8, Maple Leafs 5

In Boston, David Krejci had his first NHL hat trick as Boston held on to beat Toronto in a free-scoring clash.

Boston's Phil Kessel scored twice to extend his point streak to an NHL-high 16 games as the Bruins won their 12th straight home game despite nearly blowing a four-goal lead.

The Leafs had won three in a row.

Capitals 4, Blues 2

In Washington, the home team made it five consecutive wins by downing struggling St. Louis.

Viktor Kozlov had two goals and an assist for the Capitals, who improved to 13-1-1 at home.

The Blues have dropped five straight.

Three Capitals goals in a span of just over three minutes from late in the second period turned a 1-1 tie into a one-sided affair.

Coyotes 2, Predators 1

In Glendale, Arizona, Kyle Turris recorded his first two-goal game, including the go-ahead score with 10 minutes left, as Phoenix edged Nashville.

The Coyotes leapfrogged Nashville and idle Minnesota into seventh place in the Western Conference.

Hurricanes 2, Panthers 1, OT

In Raleigh, North Carolina, Joe Corvo scored with 43 seconds left in overtime to lift Carolina past Florida.

The Hurricanes have won 15 of 16 at home against the Panthers, though the lone loss in that stretch came in April and kept Carolina out of the playoffs.

Carolina has earned points in six of seven games since Paul Maurice was rehired as coach.

Penguins 6, Thrashers 3

In Atlanta, Evgeni Malkin boosted his NHL-leading points tally with two goals and two assists in Pittsburgh's win over Atlanta.

Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves in his return to the lineup, keeping his team in it as the Thrashers had a 31-19 shots advantage.

Malkin netted his 13th goal in the first period, added his 38th and 39th assist in the second period, and scored into an empty net in the dying seconds. He has 14 points during a seven-game scoring streak.

Stars 6, Blue Jackets 5, SO

In Dallas, Loui Eriksson first NHL hat trick got Dallas into overtime, when the Stars downed Columbus.

Brad Richards, who had a goal and three assists, and Mike Ribeiro scored in the shootout.

Eriksson has five goals in the past two games.

The Blue Jackets thought they netted the winning goal just 13 seconds into overtime, but after a video review, officials ruled the puck was kicked into the net.

Avalanche 2, Lightning 1, SO

In Tampa, Florida, Milan Hejduk was awarded the lone goal in a shootout when Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith was penalized for throwing his stick, and Colorado edged the Lightning.

Smith's stick came loose when he was making a save on Hejduk's backhander. After discussing the play for several minutes, the officials awarded the goal.

Tampa Bay has lost 16 of its past 18 games and is a dismal 4-14 in games decided by one goal.
