It was 30 years ago that 6-year-old Etan Patz left put on his prized blue captain's hat and left his SoHo apartment by himself -- for the very first time -- to walk the two blocks to catch the school bus. He did not reach the bus stop.
Three years later, the day he disappeared -- May 25 -- was designated as National Missing Children's Day.
Every year, an estimated 800,000 children are reported missing in the United States. Of that number, roughly 200,000 are abducted by family members and 58,000 are abducted by non-family members.

On May 27, Pivot Point International will be sponsoring its second annual nationwide Cut-A-Thon. Since 1997, Pivot Point has raised nearly $800,000 for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
