The 39-year-old man was recording a group of bikers when he saw a car hit a woman and flee, according to Chicago police

A man was killed in a drive-by shooting after he chased down a driver who hit a bicyclist and fled the scene early Tuesday, according to Chicago police.

Authorities said the incident took place at around 1:26 a.m. in the 600 block of East 76th Street in the city's Chatham neighborhood.

The 39-year-old man was inside his vehicle recording a group of bike riders when he saw another car hit a biker and drive away, according to police.

The man drove and caught up with the car, officials said, at which point a "verbal altercation" ensued.

At that point, a blue-colored SUV approached and someone inside opened fire, striking the man twice in the neck, according to police.

The man was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including his identity, were not available.

Authorities said the woman hit by the vehicle was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was listed in good condition with a should injury.

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting, according to police, who continue to investigate.
