Man Jumps Into Frigid Lake to Save Dog

Dog owner hospitalized after 5 minutes in 32-degree water

One dog's best friend took a dangerous dive on Sunday.

A man was hospitalized after jumping into frigid Lake Michigan water to rescue his pooch Sunday evening on the North Side.

Emergency crews, including the police Marine Unit, responded to the incident near Wilson Avenue and the lakefront about 5:15 p.m., according to a Marine Unit officer.

The man jumped into the lake after his dog, according to the officer, who said both the man and the dog were pulled out after spending about 5 minutes in the water.

The man was taken to a local hospital, although his condition was not known Sunday evening, the officer said.

Lake Michigan water temperature was recorded at 32 degrees Sunday morning, according to National Weather Service meterologist Charles Mott.

There's no word on the dog's condition.
