Loyola Students Escape Dorm Fire

Fire starts in unit which housed three girls

Three Loyola University students woke to smoke and fire in their North Side dormitory early Sunday.

Emergency crews responded to the fire at about 7:25 a.m. in the five-story Rogers Park building located just south of the university's main campus.

Three girls were in a second-floor unit when the fire broke out, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. He said one of the roommates was awoken by the fire and immediately alerted the other two girls. All three evacuated the building safely, he said.

The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes although spreading smoke became a problem for an area of the building, Langford said.

No one was injured in the blaze, and all residents of the south end of the building were evacuated, Langford said. Residents in the north end of the building were not affected by the fire.

Investigators are probing the cause of the fire Sunday.
