Kids' Fitness: What Works

Want your children to lose weight?  Then get involved.

The latest research shows that family-based programs can help obese children to slim down and stay slim for at least a year.

Dutch scientists who looked at programs from around the world say childhood obesity is best treated when the entire family decides to change its lifestyles and diet.  Those programs generally involved family cooking classes, nutrition education and families that exercise or play sports together.

A second study targets school-based exercise programs.  It shows that Phys-Ed classes alone do not lead to obese children losing weight.  But the classes had other significant benefits.  They improved children's fitness and lowered high blood pressure.
