Inside Wicker Park's iCream

Customized ice cream shop offers 129,600 combinations

People can't seem to get enough of their sweet treats. Witness the constant line outside River North's Berry Chill any time of the day.

But as word gets out and temperatures heat up, it won't be long before Wicker Park's iCream Cafe (1537 N Milwaukee) starts getting the same treatment.

It's the city's first customized ice shop, and the owners have perfected an algorithm and technology that makes it possible to obtain different combinations of flavors.

"iCream isn't like anywhere else in the world, it's the first of its kind. We want to make everyone's ice cream or sorbet exactly how they want," co-owner Jason McKinney said.

But iCream is about more than just ice cream. The cafe offers hot pudding, lattes, frozen yogurt, sorbets, shakes and smoothies.

Customers pick the flavor combinations they'd like, a color, and any additional mix-ins -- goodies like chocolate, nuts or gummy bears.

Co-owner Cora Shaw first came up with the idea for the company as a graduate school project for an MBA class at the University of Chicago.
