Chicago Gourmet may offer more in the way of wine and high-end cuisine, but its casual kick-off event, Hamburger Hop, is arguably the most fun day of the festival thanks to a refreshing absence of lines. The burger competition was a huge hit during its inaugural run last year, and tickets will likely go fast for this September's rooftop bash at the Harris Theater in Millenium Park. Last year, 15 chefs competed to create the winning burger, which was judged by culinary heavy-hitters like Thomas Keller and Food Network's Cat Cora. Chicago Gourmet hasn't yet announced the chefs or judges for the September 23 event, but expect a similarly impressive line-up of competitors, which last year included Kevin Hickey (Four Seasons), Ed Lakin (Edzo's Burger Shop), and Dirk Flanigan (The Gage). For a chance to sample the burgers and offer your two cents in the form of the People's Choice winner, you'll have to shell out $89 for a ticket, available online now. [The Feast]
