Fire Destroys Popular Greektown Resto

Costa's restaurant catches fire

There's one less choice for Greek food in the Near West Side.

An overnight fire destroyed Costa's restaurant, located at 340 S. Halsted in the heart of Greektown.

The fire also spread to a building next door that houses Athens Grocery, the Pan Hellenic Pastry Shop and Greektown Gift and Music Shop. Heavy flames went through the roof and engulfed both buildings, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The manager told firefighters that the fire started in the kitchen and may have been sparked by a fryer, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Costa's offered traditional Greek and Mediterranean specialties and was considered one of the more upscale options in Greektown, with white tablecloths and live music.

It's the second Chicago restaurant to go up in flames over the past week. South Side restaurant Blu 47 caught fire early Thursday.
