The Ice Sheet: Waiting on the Winter Classic

Every Monday morning The Ice Sheet will take a close look at everything that's happened in the NHL since Friday night at 5:00 p.m. -- or if need be, anything else the author wants to bleat about. To read them all, click here.

If you're like me, the holiday season tends to speed by like a blur. Thanks to work commitments, my trip home to New York for the Christmas holiday was delayed all the way 'til the morning of December 24, and I found myself back on Interstate 95 again just three days later headed back to Washington to get ready for another abbreviated work week. But just as soon as I got unpacked last night it was time to pack up again.

My destination: Chicago and the second edition of the NHL Winter Classic. To say the least, I'm more than a little bit jazzed to have the chance to see the game up close, an opportunity that is going to be limited to about 40,000 members of the public and media for what has fast become the most exciting day on the NHL calendar outside of Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Here's what's in store for the next few days:

-- Starting tomorrow I'll be posting updates from Chicago as they happen via the NHL FanHouse Twitter Feed.
-- Also starting tomorrow, I'll be wrapping up the day's events with an NHL Winter Classic Diary.
-- I'm packing a still camera, a mini-video camera and an audio recorder, so you can expect me to be pumping out all sorts of images, video and audio for the rest of the week.
-- On gameday, the entire NHL FanHouse crew will be getting together to live blog all the events.

Weather permitting, we're shaping up for a pretty exciting week. Here's hoping you can ride shotgun with us.
