Elderly Couple Found Dead in Cemetery

A handgun and multiple notes were found alongside the bodies of an elderly couple thought to be killed in a murder-suicide in suburban Highwood on Thursday.

The two were found following a report of shots fired in the Fort Sheridan Cemetery, a short walk north from where they lived.

James and Frieda Stein simply did not want to live without each other, the Lake County News Sun reported.

Frieda Stein, who is believed to have been suffering with cancer, wrote that she did not want to live anymore in failing health.

James Stein wrote a note saying he did not want to live without his wife.

The 73-year-old husband shot his 72-year-old wife, authorities said, then turned the gun on himself.

Both victims suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, said Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller.
