DePaul Student Vies for Miss Colombia Crown

Nicole Suarez becomes the first non-native to compete for Miss Columbia crown

It appears residency isn't a requirement when it comes to beauty pageants.

And that's why DePaul student Nicole Suarez is going from waiting tables to vying for the Miss Colombia crown.

The 19-year-old recently won the title of Miss Tolima -- the Colombian city where her parents are originally from -- which earns her a spot in the national competition and a chance to eventually compete for Miss Universe.

Her achievement has created a bit of a buzz in Colombia, because she's the first contestant in pageant history to be born outside of the country.

On the weekends, Suarez waits tables at Las Tablas, her parent's Colombian restaurant.

A party will be held in her honor on Friday featuring Grupo Cumbé, the Midwest's only Colombian Cumbia dance band.

The Miss Colombia pageant will be held in November.
