A suburban father facing murder charges in connection with the strangulation and drowning death of his 8-year-old daughter will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Neil Lofquist, of Clarendon Hills, is accused of murdering and sexually assaulting his daughter Lauren on March 26, 2006.
On Thursday, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill in in DuPage County Circuit Court, and was sentenced to 100 years in prison.
Lofquist had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of choking Lauren and drowning her in a toilet.
Previous testimony stated Lofquist had given a 14-hour confession in which he said that his daughter was the devil and that he had to kill her to save the world, the Chicago Tribune reports.
"Justice will be served on Earth and God will also judge you," Lisa Wilson, Lofquist's former wife and Lauren's mother, said in a statement she read aloud. Wilson told the court her pain has been "unimaginable" and her life has been shattered.
