CPS Urged to Update Emergency Drills

Chicago schools review safety measures following Newtown shootings

Chicago schools are reviewing safety plans following Friday's Newtown, Conn. shootings.

CPS chief safety and security officer Jadine Chou sent an email to principals on Friday which included a request that each school perform its annual emergency drill if it hasn't already done so.

A CPS spokesman told NBC 5 that she wasn't aware of any schools conducting the drills on Monday.

Schools officials were also urged to review the security measures already in place such as keeping all exterior doors locked, enforcing the display of CPS ID cards and visitor sign-in processes.

At least one local school district, west suburban Riverside, increased security measures Monday with a plan to place uniformed officers outside schools all week.
