Chicago Man Found Dead in Grand Canyon

Duffle bag found on canyon's edge led to discovery

A Chicago man has been found dead at Grand Canyon National Park.

Rescue personnel recovered the body Richard D. Jenkins, 58, on Wednesday from below the South Rim of the park.

Rangers found the body after someone turned in an abandoned duffle bag at the Yavapai Observation Station.   They searched the area where the bag had been found and spotted the body about 300 feet below the rim, just east of Yavapai Point.

Park workers hiked down the Tonto Plateau to the body, then worked with a helicopter crew to hoist it out of the canyon.

Jenkins' body was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The National Park Service is investigating the death.
