Suspect in Streeterville Carjacking in Custody, Police Say

Three people were injured in the incident

A juvenile is facing felony charges after he allegedly stole a car in the city’s Streeterville neighbourhood and struck a pedestrian and cyclist while he attempted to flee the scene.

According to Chicago police, a 17-year-old is facing one felony charge of vehicular hijacking and one count of leaving the scene of an accident after he tried stealing the car in the 100 block of East Huron Street on Tuesday evening.

Police say that a car owner was unloading items from the trunk of his 2015 Mercedes when the teen jumped into the driver’s seat and tried to flee the scene. The victim was briefly dragged by the vehicle, and the alleged carjacker crashed into a pedestrian, a cyclist, and several vehicles before fleeing the scene on foot.

The teen was apprehended a short time later in the 300 block of South Lakeshore Drive, according to authorities.

The cyclist who was struck by the vehicle was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to authorities. The car owner who was dragged by the vehicle was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated for bruising, and the pedestrian was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
